François Malingrëy graduated from the Illustration department at the École Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg in 2013. His chosen domain of artistic expression is a place of mise en abyme, where references to the history of classical and modern art abound. It is in a deafening silence and by exercising infinite precautions that one tries to ascertain the secret intentions of the mysterious naked strangers with which we are confronted. Lost in their thoughts and actions, they create the impression that we are observing an actual event, whose real meaning we cannot even begin to guess. It is as if these characters had been hollowed out; their eyes avoid ours and strive to create a sort of emotional distance.
The mysterious atmosphere is reminiscent of the work of Vilhelm Hammershøi and, from one canvas to the next, the subjects are also taken from amongst the painter's friends and family. François Malingrëy's approach to portraiture gives birth to a composition made up of symbols, ideas and feelings in portraits that reveal an expression, a state of being and a soul.
